Triumphant week for Lions

09 Feb, 2010 09:32 AM
MELTON has closed in on a Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group finals berth in the same week it stitched up the Legends and Heroes Twenty20 Cup.

In a triple treat, the Lions announced a contract extension for player-coach Duncan Harrison until the end of 2010-11, ensuring he remains at the club for at least three seasons.

On Saturday, the Lions dealt a crushing blow to the 12th-placed Kingston Saints by claiming first innings points on day one.

The dismal Saints were bowled out for 113 on their home deck at Walter Gait Reserve, Mordialloc.

James Wheelahan wreaked havoc with 4-36, making the most of the bowler-friendly conditions. "He bowls tight lines and was getting it to move around," Harrison said.

"They played and missed a lot and he stayed patient and got the rewards. All his wickets were from catches in the slips or by the wicketkeeper."

Harrison put the finishing touches on the Lions stunning bowling display with three wickets, removing the Saints' middle-order danger men Adrian Jones (20) and Jackson Boland (34) just as they threatened to get away.

The Lions bowlers were backed up by their hungry fielders. Nine of the 10 wickets were caught, and misfields were kept to a minimum.

"It was a polished performance," Harrison said.

The Lions faced 20 overs late in the day.

A score of 114 for first innings points to negate the risk of a second day wash-out was always going to be gettable for the Twenty20 champions.

"We went out with the attitude that we would sum it up at the 10-over mark," Harrison said.

"We got out of the blocks well so we thought we would have a crack from there and we got it."

Captain Michael Allen led the way with 57 not out, working alongside Michael Alexander (29) and Khalid Sawas (26 not out). It was Allen's third half-century in a row after he blasted 58 off 41 balls to go with 3-11 in a man-of-the-match performance in the Twenty20 final win over Oakleigh at the Yarraville Oval on Tuesday night.

"He's certainly hitting it all right at the moment," Harrison said. "He had a good week."

VSDCA Firsts: Kingston Saints 113 v Melton 1-114 (Allen 57no). Seconds: Kingston Saints 96 v Melton 0-11. Thirds: Broadmeadows 120 (Newman 5-19) v Melton 0-32. Fourths: Melton 4-295 (Pinder 130 Howie 78) v Broadmeadows.
